Thanks for this really insightful take on things. I think you raise some good points- there are aspects to Shotgun which are dependent on how it's configured. But even beyond that I think one of our failures was making that configuration process complicated and brittle; at the very least we should have made it really easy to do the "right" things, and harder to do the more problematic things. And there probably should be a way even for an artist to get up and running with a new site.
